YESD FOUNDERS

YESD (Youth Employment and Society Development) is a Vietnamese social enterprise founded in 2015 by three young women (Trang, Tuyet, Tuoi) who wanted to create real opportunities for local communities. What began with small education programs for young people—such as English and life-skills classes—has grown into a mix of community projects and responsible tourism.
Today, YESD works closely with ethnic minority communities in northern Vietnam, creating fair jobs through community-based tours and social projects. We focus on making sure tourism benefits local families while helping travelers experience everyday life, culture, and traditions in a respectful way.
Through partnerships with international universities, organizations, and programs like Erasmus+, YESD continues to support education, youth development, and long-term community growth—always keeping people and purpose at the heart of what we do.

OUR MISSION

YESD’s mission is to increase employment for underprivileged youth in the tourism sector and promote responsible tourism. We do this by educating a new generation of tour guides and increasing the skills of indigenous people. Our students are trained in many areas, from Vietnamese history to the fundamentals of responsible tourism. We teach them the steps needed to protect the environment and preserve their culture and traditions. Moreover, we instill in them a passion for passing along their knowledge and cultural sensitivities to international visitors, enriching their experience.

THE FOUNDING OF YESD

Ms Tuyet, who was born in 1992 and earned a BA degree in Accountancy from Hanoi University, knew Ms. Tuoi, who was born in 1989 and has a degree in English from the Hanoi Open University. While Ms. Trang, born in 1990, had a degree in English from Hanoi University, she knew Ms. Tuoi, but not Ms.Tuyet. However, after Ms Trang and Ms Tuoi went to work in Ha Giang province on a project of the Volunteers for Development (VFD) and Ms Tuoi went to work with the Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) project and wrote a paper on “Factors Promoting Business Development in Vietnam”, the three persons seem to arrive at the same conclusion that the way forward for sustainable development in Vietnam must be grounded on local, social entrepreneurship.

The three people met one another and had long and deep discussions. They had resolved to burn all bridges behind and plunge into creating a social enterprise together. It was not an easy task to make such a move because the three of them were quite young then. Ms Tuyet was the youngest of the three and was 23 years old at the time (2015). Ms. Trang was 25 then, and Ms. Tuoi was 26 in 2015. Their determination to work together was propelled by their firm belief in doing something good for young people and Vietnamese society through active engagement in a business for social purposes. In their words, “No more idle talks”, but to go ahead and register a business for youth and local development without prior experience in the tourism business or industry.

Their families should be credited for their brave venture because no criticism or discouragement was given by their families for their decision. In fact, they received warm support from their families to embark on a somewhat risky path. But even in childhood and while growing up, they were blessed by their parent’s support and trust in them, always allowing them to pick and choose what they wanted to do, as also the choice of what courses to take, which major to choose in college, and which career they were to pursue.

With the invention of the covid-vaccine, we really wish to have a better year with brighter future for tourism. I just built up a homestay and hope to welcome guests in this Autumn. So happy to be a member of YESD.

WHAT VOLUNTEERS TALKED ABOUT US

“I was excited to apply because I knew about YESD through some activities to develop responsible tourism. The core values of YESD are consistent with what I am doing. My main job was to promote local handicraft products and improve the English skills of Thon Tha villagers. I enjoyed watching the product making, connecting with customers, and packing and shipping. I also loved teaching English. I was happy to see more and more students paying attention in class and seeing everyone’s progress. Volunteering in Thon Tha with YESD made me feel ecstatic and meaningful, knowing I can give people a better life.”

“During the early days of the project, I was greeted with friendliness. I was taught how to knit, visited famous local tourist attractions, and enjoyed the specialties of Tay ethnic… After a month of operation, with the role of English teaching assistant for local guides and developing local handicraft products, I feel very happy to have been able to help people get better every day.”

– Phuong, 20yo, Vietnam –

I came from France with a lot of expectations. I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in or adapt to the country. But my family host treated me really well, and made me feel at home. This experience is very enriching as I am learning a lot about the regional culture through the local community. I also had the chance to travel in the region and discover its most beautiful sceneries. It is a real pleasure to teach English to the friendly locals and to help the marketing team. I will never forget this experience in Vietnam.
