TRIP ITINERARY

This 5-day Ha Giang Photography Tour is designed for photographers and travelers who want to capture the beauty of Ha Giang without rushing. Traveling by comfortable private car, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop at scenic viewpoints, photograph dramatic mountain passes, document traditional villages, and connect with local ethnic communities. Village treks provide intimate moments to photograph daily life, handmade crafts, and spectacular natural scenery throughout the journey.

Day 1: HANOI - HA GIANG - THON THA

Your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel in Hanoi at 7:30 AM before heading toward Ha Giang. Along the drive, there will be opportunities to photograph the changing landscapes as the plains gradually transform into rugged limestone mountains.

Arrive at Thon Tha Village around 2:00 PM, where lunch is served at a traditional Tay homestay. After checking into your bungalow, enjoy a relaxed afternoon photography walk through the peaceful village.

Thon Tha is one of the most photogenic Tay villages in Ha Giang, featuring traditional stilt houses surrounded by rice fields, and forested hills. The afternoon light creates beautiful conditions for photographing local life as villagers tend their gardens, work in the fields, and children play along quiet village paths.

Overnight in a traditional Tay-style bungalow.

day 2: THON THA - KHUOI MY FULL DAY TREK

Wake up early for optional sunrise photography around Thon Tha Village, when soft morning light blankets the rice paddies and surrounding mountains.

After breakfast, begin a scenic trek through lush valleys and forest trails connecting Thon Tha and Khuoi My Village. This route offers countless opportunities for landscape photography, including terraced fields, mountain ridges, streams, and traditional Dao villages tucked into the hills.

Throughout the day, you’ll have opportunities to photograph the daily lives of the Dao Ao Dai ethnic people, including farming activities, traditional wooden houses, and authentic village scenes. Your local guide will share stories about Dao culture, helping you better understand the people behind your photographs.

Enjoy a picnic lunch along the trail or, a meal at a local family—an authetic daily travel photography opportunity.

Continue trekking back to Thon Tha through different scenery, capturing changing light across the valley. If requested (additional fee), a traditional cultural performance can also provide wonderful opportunities to photograph colorful traditional costumes and local music.

Overnight in the same bungalow.

DAY 3: THON THA - QUAN BA - MA PI LENG - DONG VAN

After breakfast, begin one of Vietnam’s most spectacular scenic drives along the legendary Happiness Road.

The first photography stop is Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate, where panoramic views overlook the famous Quan Ba Twin Mountains and the surrounding valleys. Early morning light often creates dramatic layers of mist and mountain scenery.

Continue to Lung Tam Village, home to a traditional hemp weaving cooperative run by local H’mong women. Here you’ll have opportunities to photograph artisans weaving hemp fabric, colorful handmade textiles, and portraits of local women practicing centuries-old craftsmanship.

The journey continues through breathtaking mountain landscapes toward Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of Vietnam’s most iconic photography locations. Numerous viewpoints provide outstanding opportunities to capture towering limestone cliffs, winding mountain roads, and the emerald Nho Que River far below.

If time and light permit, enjoy a short walk along the famous Sky Path, offering some of the finest panoramic photography opportunities anywhere in Ha Giang.

Overnight in Dong Van Town.

DAY 4: DONG VAN - H’MONG KING PALACE - SUNG LA - NAM DAM

Along the route, stop at small H’mong villages where you’ll have opportunities to respectfully photograph traditional homes, village life, and local families going about their daily routines.

Visit the historic H’Mong King Palace, whose unique blend of European and Chinese architectural styles offers fascinating opportunities for architectural photography.

Continue to Sung La Valley, one of Ha Giang’s most picturesque villages. Surrounded by limestone peaks and traditional houses, Sung La became famous as the filming location for the award-winning movie Pao’s Story. Depending on the season, vibrant flower gardens, corn fields, and traditional homes create beautiful photographic compositions.

In the afternoon, arrive at Nam Dam Village, a welcoming Dao community known for its well-preserved traditional houses and peaceful surroundings. After checking into your homestay, enjoy a leisurely walk through the village to photograph local families, traditional architecture and forest scenery.

Overnight in a traditional Dao house.

DAY 5: NAM DAM - LUNG KHUY CAVE - HANOI

Enjoy one final peaceful morning in Nam Dam Village, with opportunities to photograph village life before breakfast as local residents begin their day.

After breakfast, visit Lung Khuy Cave, one of Ha Giang’s most impressive cave systems. A scenic 1.2-kilometer uphill walk leads to the cave entrance, offering beautiful mountain views along the way.

Inside the cave, photographers can capture dramatic limestone formations, intricate stalactites, and fascinating natural textures illuminated by carefully installed lighting.

After exploring the cave, begin the drive back to Hanoi, making scenic stops whenever conditions allow. Arrive in Hanoi at approximately 5:30 PM. End of the tour.
The itinerary is subject to change or cancellation due to weather conditions.

Ha Chiang loop for an old boy

Well what can I say about my Ha Chiang loop trip I did with Yesd. They were excellent from start to finish. As a 54 year old man I did the loop solo with my driver Chinh as I wanted to avoid the happy water and karaoke aspect. Chinh understood this perfectly and took me on a fabulous trip. We took local routes when he could, avoiding some of main routes. He kept ahead of the ‘Mongolian army’ as he called the throngs of other loopers and often arrived at view points before they arrived …

    A memory for life

An amazing experience! Incredible guides! You almost feel privileged compared to other groups. The accommodation is top-notch; the house, the welcome, the meals—everything is perfect. The mountain trek is magical, the motorbike trek is insane (beware of sore bums by the end!), incredible views the whole time, and super enriching stories. It really puts things into perspective compared to our European comforts—it feels great! To conclude this review, thank you again to the entire YESD Travel team; they are truly wonderful people.
