Mai Chau & Pu Luong 3-Day Tour Schedule

Follow a three-day route from Hanoi to Mai Chau, Te Village, Pu Luong Nature Reserve, Pho Doan Market, Tom Village, and back to Hanoi.

Day 1 HANOI – MAI CHAU – TE VILLAGE

We’ll pick you up from your hotel in Hanoi at 8 AM and travel 160 km southwest to Mai Chau. On arrival we’ll begin our trek through open rice fields, and forests, passing tiny villages and meeting the local farmers at work.

Finally, we descend into a valley that is home to a White Thai community. Our homestay hosts will welcome you and serve dinner before we take a well-earned rest for the night.

Overnight at the home of a White Thai family in Te Village.

Day 2 TE VILLAGE – PU LUONG NATURE RESERVE

After breakfast, we’ll trek to Xam Khoe Village. You’ll have some time to explore and then a vehicle will transport us to a local family’s house for lunch.

Then we’ll take a car to Don Village, where we will start a 1.5-hour walk along the road to Hieu Hamlet – the most beautiful and remote hamlet in Pu Luong Nature Reserve. We’ll hike an “off-the-beaten-track” trail, passing through the beautiful valley of rice terraces and up to mountains for a panoramic view of the area.

Continue trekking up along the captivating waterfall until you arrive at a stilt house for an overnight homestay. You’ll have dinner featuring local specialties and then stay overnight in a traditional Black Thai bungalow with wonderful views from the window.

Day 3 PU LUONG NATURE RESERVE – HANOI

After breakfast with locals, you will say goodbye to the sweet host family. Visit Pho Doan Market if it’s on Sunday, taking the chance to witness the hustle and bustle of the Northwest upland fair, and then transfer to Tom Village for a scenic trek with your tour guide.

On the trek, you’ll be mesmerized as you pass the precariously situated rice fields that are terraced up the side of the mountain, reaching toward the sky. You’ll be fascinated by the numerous water wheels, a unique cultural innovation of Thai and Muong people living in the nature reserve of Pu Luong to move irrigation water uphill for their farming activities.

    What Travelers Say About YESD

Real stories from travelers who joined YESD for authentic, responsible, and locally connected travel experiences in Vietnam.

Ha Chiang loop for an old boy

Well what can I say about my Ha Chiang loop trip I did with Yesd. They were excellent from start to finish. As a 54 year old man I did the loop solo with my driver Chinh as I wanted to avoid the happy water and karaoke aspect. Chinh understood this perfectly and took me on a fabulous trip. We took local routes when he could, avoiding some of main routes. He kept ahead of the ‘Mongolian army’ as he called the throngs of other loopers and often arrived at view points before they arrived …

An amazing experience! Incredible guides! You almost feel privileged compared to other groups. The accommodation is top-notch; the house, the welcome, the meals—everything is perfect. The mountain trek is magical, the motorbike trek is insane, incredible views the whole time, and super enriching stories.
