TRIP ITINERARY

This 2-day Ha Giang Backseat Motorbike Tour is designed for travelers with limited time who still want the full loop feeling. Ride with a trusted local guide, stop at mountain viewpoints and ethnic villages, visit craft communities, cross Ma Pi Leng Pass, and experience Ha Giang’s dramatic landscapes without riding the motorbike yourself. Going at a slightly faster pace than the original Ha Giang Easy Rider tour, you’ll finish the loop in two days.

There are several buses that you can take from Hanoi to Ha Giang, either day bus or night bus. The bus is not included in the package but we can help to arrange it.

Upon your arrival time, your transfer driver will wait for you at Ha Giang bus station to pick you up at Thon Tha village. Check in at Thon Tha homestay and enjoy your free afternoon. The Tay traditional homestay is the stilt thatched-roof house, everyone sleeps on the floor with a mattress, warm blankets, mosquito net, and pillow, and is separated from other beds by curtain with outside bathrooms.

NOTE: You can leave your luggage at your homestay and bring a smaller bag for 2-day trip because you can take it back on the return day. You should bring your original passport, sun cream, sunglasses, hiking shoes, and some cash for your personal expenses.

Please see more details in the YESD Bus Guidelines.

Day 1: THON THA – MEO VAC – MA PI LENG PASS – DONG VAN – 175km

Start your adventure to Dong Van Loop. Please wear your motorbike protectors, and helmet, and sit close to your driver, which is for your safety and it’s easier for him to drive. On the route, stop at many attractions to take photos and get insight into nature. Listen to a legend of Twin Mountain and the history of Heaven’s Gate in Quan Ba district.

Then visit Lung Tam, a Flower Hmong village to learn how to make embroidery from those experts. Lunch will be served on the route. Then hop on your motorbike with your driver and continue your journey to Ma Pi Leng Pass.

Ma Pi Leng Pass is not long but it is the most adventurous pass in the northern border mountain area. It is considered the “King” of Vietnam’s past or Great Wall of Vietnam or the Pyramid of the Meo. At the top of Ma Pi Leng Mount is the “Happiness Road”, there is a stone stele recording the marks in the construction process. Ma Pi Leng Pass is considered a unique regional heritage of landscape and geomorphology; the pass peak area is considered one of the most beautiful viewpoints to enjoy the panoramic in Vietnam.

Net to the road is abyss, below is the Nho Que River with cool water. If the time is enough and not so dark, your driver and guide will stop you to visit a village on skypath road in the Flower H’mong community.

Overnight at a hotel here.

day 2: DONG VAN – H’MONG KING PALACE – SUNG LA – HA GIANG - 175km

After breakfast at your hotel, drive past Phố Cáo, Sủng Là. Stop by these villages to visit H’mong families and interact with the locals. Visit the palace of the H’mong king, which was a royal family of high rank during French colonial rule – this palace attracts keen interest from architecturally minded visitors due to its mixed style of European and Chinese architecture.

The Hmong King Palace is located in the Sa Phin commune, Dong Van district, Ha Giang. In the early nineteenth century, the Vuong family controlled the entire region and Vuong Duc Chinh, head of the family, proclaimed himself “King of the H’Mong”. The construction began in 1920 and lasted eight years. It was not only a building but also a fort in the middle of a rocky highland.

Due to its location which is light years away from modern life in big cities, Sung La was chosen as the location for the award-winning movie Pao’s Story. Since then Sung La has become a popular destination for travelers looking for something different, and of course movie buffs too. Like other villages of minority people, villagers plant corn and other staples. But what is different here is that there are rose fields that cover almost all of the nearby area, with harvested roses being taken to big cities like Hanoi.

Then drive through small villages and past vast agricultural landscapes and the sweeping mountains of the North heading back to Thon Tha and having a dinner here before your driver drops you off at Ha Giang bus station.

The itinerary is subject to change or cancellation due to weather conditions.

  • Included: Ground transport, English-speaking guide, accommodation, activities & meals mentioned above.
  • Not included: Airfares, visa fees, travel insurance, gratuities, personal expenses & all other services not clearly mentioned above.

Ha Chiang loop for an old boy

Well what can I say about my Ha Chiang loop trip I did with Yesd. They were excellent from start to finish. As a 54 year old man I did the loop solo with my driver Chinh as I wanted to avoid the happy water and karaoke aspect. Chinh understood this perfectly and took me on a fabulous trip. We took local routes when he could, avoiding some of main routes. He kept ahead of the ‘Mongolian army’ as he called the throngs of other loopers and often arrived at view points before they arrived …

    A memory for life

An amazing experience! Incredible guides! You almost feel privileged compared to other groups. The accommodation is top-notch; the house, the welcome, the meals—everything is perfect. The mountain trek is magical, the motorbike trek is insane (beware of sore bums by the end!), incredible views the whole time, and super enriching stories. It really puts things into perspective compared to our European comforts—it feels great! To conclude this review, thank you again to the entire YESD Travel team; they are truly wonderful people.

I will escort you on Ha Giang motorbike or car tour very often if you travel with YESD. Luckily I and my wife both work in tourism industry so she sympathize with my absence when I'm on tour. I have worked with YESD for 6 years. I really like YESD's working spirit when they care of the local communities, educate local people how to protect the environment or give local guides some medical and professional training courses. Wish all the best to our organization.

I used to be a disoriented boy and felt lost in my future career. Until I met V4D non-profit organization where I learnt English and then YESD where I could use my English to work as an English tour guide. Now I have a small family with a little boy and I love my job so much. This job gives me income that is not stable but not so bad. It shows my passion on tourism and pride of my ethnic cultures.

I started to learn English 4 years ago. It has brought great value to my life. Thanks to YESD, I had a chance to study English and tourism skills. I am a local guide and earn more money to support my small family. My English is still not really good but I will improve it day by day. The more you travel with YESD, the better my English will be. Your sincerely friend, Van 🙂
