MAI CHAU – PU LUONG TRIBAL TREKKER

This trekking tour explores the beautiful Mai Chau region. The area is home to the White Thai Muong ethnic minority people, known for their resistance to assimilation, but also for their hospitality. You’ll walk through photogenic landscapes, meet friendly villagers and get off-the-beaten-path. Staying with local families, you’ll get a glimpse into local life and a true appreciation of this hidden gem.

TRIP ITINERARY

Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau - Te Village

We’ll pick you up from your hotel in Hanoi at 8AM and travel 160KM south-west to Mai Chau. On arrival we’ll begin our trek through open rice fields, forest, passing tiny villages and meet the local farmers at work. Finally, we descend into a valley that is home of a White Thai community. Our homestay hosts will make you welcome, preparing dinner, before we take a well-earned rest for the night.Overnight at a White Thai family at Te village.

Day 2: Te Village – Pu Luong Nature Reserve

After breakfast we’ll trek to Xam Khoe Village. You’ll have some time to explore and then a vehicle will transport us to a local family’s house for lunch. The get on your car move to Don Village, we will start a 1.5 hour-walking-trip along the road to Don village where we start to trek to Hieu Hamlet – the most beautiful and remote hamlet in Pu Luong Nature Reserve, hike on the off-the-beaten track passing through the beautiful valley of rice terraces and up to mountains for panoramic view of the region. Continue trekking up along the captivating waterfall to come to a stilt house for overnight homestay. Dinner with local specialties and let’s stay overnight in a traditional bungalow of Black Thai with wonderful view from windows.

Day 3: Pu Luong Nature Reserve - Hanoi

After breakfast with locals, you will say good-bye to the sweet family host. Visit Pho Doan Market if it’s on Sunday, taking the chance to capture the hustle of the Northwest upland fair and then transfer to Tom village for a scenic trek with your tour guide. On the trekking way, the mysterious land lying dangerously on the back of the mountain with rice-terraced paddies tottering horizontally to the sky will capture your heart and imagination at first sight. You are fascinated by the plenty of water-wheels, an unique cultural feature of Thai and Muong people living in the nature reserve of Pu Luong to navigate water source for their farming activities.Lunch will be served at a local family in Mai Ha village. Then head back to Hanoi after short visit around Lac village where it is famous for its embroidery handmade products.
